A music publisher that holds the rights to Elvis Presley’s songs has filed a lawsuit against Anthropic in New York, accusing the AI company of using hundreds of Presley songs without permission to train its models.

The plaintiff alleges that Anthropic relied on protected music by Elvis Presley when developing its AI models. According to the publisher, this occurred without the appropriate permission. The lawsuit therefore concerns both the use of the material and whether processing the tracks for training purposes was legally permissible under copyright law.

The lawsuit also describes how Claude’s output behaves when users instruct the system to reimagine songs for a modern audience. According to the complaint, the original structure, distinctive musical elements, and entire verses or choruses are sometimes preserved in the process.
