Elon Musk has rejected speculation about a possible merger of Tesla and SpaceX, citing the electric carmaker's China business.
Background: Why the China business is an obstacle
In a statement, Musk explained that a combination of the two companies would not be possible as long as Tesla is economically active in China. "Das muss mit einem angemessenen Verfahren gemacht werden", Musk said, then handed over to Tesla's chief legal officer Brandon Ehrhart. Ehrhart pointed to existing joint projects, including the construction of a chip factory called Terafab.
The remarks come against the backdrop of ongoing speculation about closer interlocking of Tesla and SpaceX. Musk also announced that he intends to focus more strongly on the Chinese business, without however naming concrete steps or timelines.
