Tesla reported a steep decline in quarterly profit on Wednesday, even as chief executive Elon Musk framed the company's pivot to humanoid robots and autonomous vehicles as the foundation of its next growth chapter.
Profit falls as costs climb
The electric-vehicle maker said net income fell sharply compared with a year earlier, with operating margin compressed by lower average selling prices and elevated spending on artificial intelligence and production lines. Tesla did not provide a dollar figure in the summary released before the call, but executives acknowledged that cost per vehicle had ticked up as the company ramped output of new models.
