Vienna
The Austrian National Council (Nationalrat) on Tuesday passed a bundle of new regulations as part of its so-called Parliament Marathon, including a ban on discarding tobacco products and e-cigarettes on public playgrounds, as well as a prohibition on disposable e-cigarettes.
Strengthening Ethnic Groups and Constitutional Safeguarding
At the start of the session at 9 a.m., lawmakers will address, among other things, the strengthening of ethnic groups. Going forward, they will be explicitly named in the Ethnic Groups Act, safeguarded by a constitutional provision. This grants the recognized ethnic groups in Austria a constitutionally protected status.
At the center of the public health policy decisions is a comprehensive package on nicotine and tobacco protection. Disposable e-cigarettes will be banned by law at the end of the year. The amendment to the law is primarily intended to prohibit the sale of disposable electronic cigarettes. Whether or not they contain nicotine is irrelevant here. The ban is justified, among other reasons, by the fact that the products are small, inexpensive, eye-catching in design, and available in numerous flavors. The draft states that e-cigarettes are particularly attractive to young people.
