Elisabeth Hammer, managing director of the Viennese aid organization neunerhaus and chairwoman of BAWO, expects a further increase in people without housing or experiencing homelessness in Austria and is calling for a cross-departmental strategy from the federal government as well as a poverty-proof minimum income.

Assessment of the situation and demands

Hammer justifies her warning with a multiple burden: food and energy prices are rising, public funding in the social sector is not keeping pace with wage adjustments, and at the same time the number of fixed-term rental contracts is increasing. "In their own house at any rate, public funding is not keeping pace with wage adjustments," the statement says. Fixed-term contracts, "which according to Hammer always carry a risk," further aggravate the situation because they offer hardly any planning security.
