The Neustart association is warning of the consequences of the cuts planned in the new double budget for the probation service and sees Austria's internal security at risk.
According to the Neustart association, the planned savings in the justice sector hit the probation service disproportionately hard. Managing Director Alfred Kohlberger stated on Thursday that the current plans come at the expense of crime prevention and thus at the expense of security in the country. Probation supervision is a central instrument for preventing reoffending and reintegrating offenders into society.
According to Kohlberger, the Neustart association currently supervises 12,600 people. "However, only 11,500 are funded," he continued. The gap between the need for supervision and the financial resources has widened steadily in recent years. At the same time, the workload for supervision is continuously rising, Kohlberger emphasized: "Den geplanten Kürzungen stehe ein laufend steigender Aufwand gegenüber."
