According to a new EU-wide survey, three-quarters of Europeans regard the European Union as a place of stability in an uncertain world, although confidence in the future of the EU – particularly in Germany – is noticeably waning.
The European Union continues to enjoy a strong reputation among its citizens as a factor of stability. According to a new survey conducted in April and May on behalf of the EU Commission, 76 percent of respondents across Europe consider the EU a place of stability in an uncertain world. In Austria, 76 percent share this view; in Germany, the figure is 70 percent.
Anchor of stability amid growing skepticism
At the same time, the survey reveals growing pessimism when it comes to the future of the EU itself. While 59 percent of respondents EU-wide still express optimism about the Union's future, the share in Germany has dropped sharply compared with the previous year: only 48 percent of Germans said they were "rather optimistic" or "very optimistic" – almost 70 percent the year before. The future of the world is also viewed predominantly in dark terms: 58 percent of Europeans assess it pessimistically, as do one in two Austrians.
