Damascus, July 12, 2026

In Damascus on Saturday, a new Syrian Parliament convened for its first session, roughly 19 months after the fall of ruler Bashar al-Assad.

Transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa opened the constituent session with a speech in which he urged the deputies to make the chamber a "model of responsibility and competence." The People's Assembly should "justify the trust placed in it by representing the people and fulfilling its legislative and oversight duties." Sharaa advocated for "a state that enables its citizens to enjoy dignity and justice, as well as stability and prosperity."

Composition and selection procedure

The new People's Assembly comprises a total of 210 seats. Two-thirds of the deputies were determined last year by regional electoral bodies, in whose selection, according to Reuters, only about 6,000 electors participated. The remaining 70 members were personally appointed by Transitional President al-Sharaa. Sharaa explained that this procedure had been necessary because of the millions of displaced persons and the lack of voter registers.
