The Court of Appeals in Wellington rejected Kim Dotcom's appeal against the extradition order to the United States on Wednesday, thereby upholding an earlier ruling by the lower court.

The decision further clears the way for the internet entrepreneur to be transferred to US jurisdiction. According to the relevant authorities, he faces decades-long prison sentences in the United States. Together with three other former managers of the file-sharing platform Megaupload, which was shut down in 2012, he is accused of causing massive financial damage to film studios and record labels.

Kim Dotcom, whose legal name is Kim Schmitz, has lived in New Zealand since 2010. At the behest of the FBI, New Zealand authorities carried out a raid on his villa in January 2012. A lengthy legal battle over whether the founder of Megaupload should be extradited to the United States has been underway ever since.
