Nicușor Dan: Drone in Galați was Russian Geran-2 type

The impact occurred near the Romanian-Ukrainian border and caused a fire in the residential building. It was the first drone attack on a residential building outside of Ukraine since the start of the Russian war of aggression in 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed doubts that the drone that crashed in Galați could have originated from Russia. The Russian embassy in Bucharest accused Ukraine of staging a provocation.

International Condemnation and NATO Reaction

The incident was condemned internationally. Several Western states expressed concern about the expansion of the conflict to NATO territory, even though Romania has not yet activated any alliance clauses.

Romanian authorities initiated a comprehensive investigation at the impact site. Experts secured debris and documented the damage to the building's structure to reconstruct the drone's exact flight path.

Investigations and Security Situation

The two injured individuals were taken to a nearby hospital. According to local health authorities, they were in stable condition on Saturday and continued to receive medical care.

NATO reaffirmed its solidarity with Romania but emphasized that the circumstances of the incident still needed to be fully clarified. A spokesperson referred to the ongoing investigations by the Romanian side.

The incident exacerbates the already tense security situation in the Black Sea region. Romania had repeatedly found drone debris on its territory in recent months, but had never before recorded a direct impact on an inhabited building.
