The US sporting goods group Nike exceeded analyst expectations with its quarterly results: profit rose significantly, while revenue declined slightly and the outlook for the coming months was subdued.

In the past quarter, Nike's revenue fell by one percent year-on-year to 10.97 billion dollars (9.6 billion euros). Analysts had on average expected 10.86 billion dollars, meaning the company slightly exceeded market expectations on revenue. However, US business came in somewhat weaker than experts had forecast, at 4.83 billion dollars.

In China, by contrast, Nike beat expectations: revenue of around 1.3 billion dollars was higher than analysts had on average predicted. The China business is considered an important growth market for the group, although it had come under pressure in recent quarters.
