Niklas Süle to play in the Kreisliga for SV Tiefenbach

The 1.95-meter-tall defender had ended his career in May, after sustaining a knee injury in April during Borussia Dortmund's 1:2 defeat in Hoffenheim on 18 April and having to leave the pitch in the 42nd minute. An MRI scan the following day ruled out the initially feared diagnosis of another torn cruciate ligament. „Als ich am nächsten Tag ins MRT gekommen bin und die gute Nachricht erhalten habe (dass es doch kein Kreuzbandriss war), war für mich zu tausend Prozent klar, dass es vorbei ist“, Süle said. Without the new cruciate ligament tear, it had become absolutely clear to him that it was time to hang up his boots.

From Hoffenheim youth product to Bayern champion

Süle began his professional career in May 2013 with a Bundesliga appearance for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. He made a total of 117 competitive appearances there before moving to FC Bayern Munich for the 2017/18 season. With the Munich club, he celebrated his greatest triumphs: five German league titles, two DFB-Pokal victories, as well as the Champions League triumph in 2020 with a win in the final against Paris Saint-Germain. On top of that came the FIFA Club World Cup title in 2021. The native of Franconia made 171 appearances for Bayern.

In summer 2022, he moved on a free transfer to Borussia Dortmund, where Süle signed a four-year contract as one of the top earners. He made 110 appearances for BVB and reached the Champions League final again in 2024, where his club, however, lost to Real Madrid. Sportingly, his playing time at BVB began to decrease from season to season, partly because injuries repeatedly set him back — including two cruciate ligament tears that cost him around 387 days and 54 matches over the course of his career. His final contract in Dortmund would have expired at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Back on the village pitch

At SV Tiefenbach, whose club colors are black and yellow and who play in the Kreisliga Sinsheim, Süle can now enjoy football away from business and marketing. „Ich freue mich sehr, den Fußball endlich wieder aus einem ganz anderen Blickwinkel zu erleben – dort, wo es einzig und allein um den Sport an sich geht und nicht um ein Geschäft oder ums Geld“, the defender said. During the season, the Tiefenbach players train on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. at the club's own sports grounds.

Süle looks back on 49 international appearances for the German national team and was regarded for years as one of the defining center-backs of the Bundesliga. His weight and physicality were recurring themes in media coverage. In Tiefenbach, he is now returning to his roots: amateur football, friends, and the pure joy of the game.

A perspective without commerce

SV Tiefenbach, whose squad officially numbers nine players according to official data, is gaining national attention with the new signing. The last recorded transfer for the club had been Lorenz Stellberger. Süle himself had most recently confirmed the move to his local club in a conversation with Sky, where he will line up side by side with long-time companions.

With his commitment to the Kreisliga, Süle is turning a page that has little in common with the glamour of the Champions League — and is all the more appealing to him for that very reason. The club from Baden-Württemberg benefits from the media echo, while Süle himself benefits from the unconstrained football he had increasingly missed in the professional leagues.
