Lausanne, July 7, 2026

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has removed Nordic Combined from the program of the 2030 Winter Games in the French Alps and justified the move with the consistently low audience response.

The decision was reached following consultations in Lausanne and affects one of the oldest disciplines in the winter sports program. According to IOC figures, Nordic Combined performed worst in audience response studies at the 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026 Winter Games. This data formed the basis for the decision not to continue the discipline.

IOC's Reasoning

Nordic Combined consists of the individual disciplines of ski jumping and cross-country skiing and had been part of the men's program since the 1924 Olympic Winter Games. This brings an end to an Olympic tradition for this sport that spans more than a century.

In return, the IOC is adding two new disciplines to the program. The newcomers are freeriding and Synchro-9, a variant of figure skating. Both formats are intended to modernize the program and appeal to younger target audiences.

The parallel giant slaloms of the alpine skiing competitions will remain in the program of the five rings. In this way, the IOC is securing at least part of the classic alpine disciplines for the Games in the Alps.
