North Korea fired an unidentified projectile toward the sea on Wednesday, according to South Korean and Japanese reports, as Seoul and Washington prepare for their annual large-scale military maneuvers.

The launch was reported by the South Korean news agency Yonhap and confirmed by Japan's Ministry of Defense. Initial analyses indicated it was a ballistic missile, the range of which is still being examined. North Korea's response came just days after the annual joint exercise was announced.

The South Korean military stated that it had tracked the flight of the projectile in real time and is preparing for possible further tests. South Korea and the US have significantly expanded their annual major maneuvers in response to the nuclear threat from North Korea. According to military circles, the maneuver is to officially begin in the coming week.
