Swiss pharmaceutical group Novartis is acquiring the UK-based, privately held biotech company Myricx Bio for a purchase price of up to $1.5 billion.
The transaction provides for an immediate upfront payment of $1.1 billion, according to the details provided. In addition, up to $400 million in milestone-based contingent payments may be made, bringing the total value of the acquisition to up to $1.5 billion.
Background: Antibody-drug conjugates
With the purchase, Novartis says it aims to strengthen its oncology division and gain access to a new class of active ingredients. Myricx Bio works on so-called antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), which are considered a targeted therapeutic approach directed against tumor cells.
