North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has emerged as Germany's leading state for local public services, with more than every second municipality classified as 'very well' supplied, according to the 'Gemeindecheck Daseinsvorsorge' published by the Institut der Deutschen Wirtschaft (IW) on Monday.

The comprehensive study examined all 10,817 German municipalities across 17 indicators in five categories: digital infrastructure, health, mobility, leisure, and education. Criteria included the accessibility of general practitioners, hospitals, schools, daycare centers, train stations, highways, and leisure facilities such as swimming pools or museums, as well as mobile network and broadband coverage.

Overall, 86 percent of NRW municipalities received at least a 'good' rating. The state's strong performance was driven by dense urban infrastructure and widespread access to essential services.
