Background: Uninviting Danger Dan

The background to the debate includes the controversial uninviting of rapper Danger Dan from the ZDF satire show "Die Anstalt". ZDF had canceled the appearance with reference to the song lyrics. "Der Text propagiere Selbstjustiz und schließe rechtswidrige Taten und Gewalt nicht aus", the broadcaster said. In addition, the song could be understood as an instruction for political extremism. Danger Dan himself had announced that he wanted to present the song "Keine Angst" together with pianist Igor Levit.

Cabaret artist Wilfried Schmickler defended the rapper and said he could not recognize any call for violence in the text. According to Schmickler, Danger Dan pursues the goal of encouraging young people to defend themselves against violence-prone right-wing extremists.

Pressure from the right: AfD and the Interstate Broadcasting Treaty

Liminski, who is a member of the ZDF Television Council, also confirmed that the federal states are keeping an eye on a possible electoral success of the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt. The AfD had announced that, in the event of taking over government, it would terminate the Interstate Broadcasting Treaty. Liminski explained that such a step was formally legally possible. At the same time, he pointed out that the Basic Law obliges the federal states to ensure appropriate financing of public broadcasting.

The public broadcasters have long faced a wide range of criticism. Conservative circles accuse them of lacking political balance. In addition, there are allegations that certain regions of Germany are not adequately covered, as well as the recurring accusation of inefficient and overpriced structures. Funding through the broadcasting fee is often perceived by critics as a compulsory levy.

Criticism of ARD and ZDF

Against this backdrop, Liminski placed the current debate in context. Broadcasters such as ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio must ask themselves whether they have done justice to all currents and regions in their programming. He considers the discussion about program profiles and structural reforms necessary and overdue.

The uninviting of Danger Dan and the subsequent reactions have further intensified the debate about the latitude of public broadcasting programmers. Advocates emphasize the freedom of editorial teams in selecting guests and contributions. Critics, on the other hand, see this as a signal that controversial artistic positions are being pushed out of the program.

Outlook on possible reforms

Liminski announced that he would continue to monitor developments in the supervisory bodies. The broadcasters themselves signaled a willingness to talk about possible reforms. How far-reaching such adjustments to the program offering and structures will be, however, remains open.
