The number of pirate attacks on merchant ships has fallen in the first half of 2026 to the lowest level since 1992, according to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) in London.

Current IMB Figures

According to IMB data released on Thursday, the authority counted a total of 38 pirate attacks on ships worldwide between January and June 2026. This puts the number of incidents well below the figure for the first half of 2025, when 90 attacks were still recorded. The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) spoke of as few pirate attacks as had not been seen in more than 30 years.

During the reporting period, the IMB also recorded 67 crew members taken hostage by pirates. In total, attackers boarded 27 ships and hijacked five of them. At the same time, the authority stressed that the decline should not obscure the fact that the threat continues to exist. A spokesperson pointed to the ongoing risks to civilian shipping in several maritime areas.
