ÖBB warn of train cancellations due to extreme heat

Despite ongoing measures to increase the heat resistance of the rail network, such as modern construction materials and monitoring systems, "extreme weather events cannot be fully compensated," according to the ÖBB. The company also pointed out that heat-related adjustments to operations could be made at short notice.

Safety takes priority

The ÖBB thanked all passengers for their understanding and cooperation in this "außergewöhnlichen Wettersituation." Travelers were asked to use the digital timetable information service as well as the ÖBB service hotline to obtain current information.

The background to the warning is a phase with significantly elevated temperatures that is putting strain on the rail network in parts of Austria. In extreme heat, rails can deform, signal systems can react more sensitively, and vehicles can be subjected to greater stress, which can lead to speed reductions or line closures.

The ÖBB emphasized that investments in more heat-resistant materials and in an early warning system for rail monitoring had already been made in recent years. Nevertheless, a residual risk remains when temperatures exceed certain threshold values.

For travelers, the company recommended postponing non-essential trips to cooler times of day and carrying sufficient drinking water as well as sun protection. The advice applies in particular to longer long-distance routes.

The warning is part of a series of heat warnings from recent summers in Central Europe, during which railway operators across Europe have faced similar restrictions. The incident highlights the vulnerability of European rail infrastructure to climatic extremes.
