Austria reached the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 3:3 draw against Algeria on the final matchday of Group J, with Sasa Kalajdzic heading in the equalizer in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
A 0:0 would have been enough for both teams to advance, but the match turned into an open slugfest. Algeria took a 3:2 lead through Riyad Mahrez in the 93rd minute before Kalajdzic struck at the last moment for Austria, keeping the ÖFB team's tournament hopes alive.
The late goal had far-reaching consequences beyond Group J. Since Austria overtook Algeria on points with the draw, the constellations shifted for the third-placed teams. Iran, which was waiting in its World Cup base in Tijuana for the remaining results, was calculated out of the tournament as the eighth-best third-placed team – meaning Kalajdzic's late goal also indirectly decided Iran's fate.
