Austrian ski racer Mirjam Puchner, 34, announced her retirement from active competition after the Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo and Milan at a press conference in Hallein on Tuesday.

The speed specialist, who hails from Pongau in Salzburg, explained to journalists that she no longer felt the ultimate commitment and unconditional willingness to take risks necessary to compete at the very top in the World Cup. "To compete at the very top in the World Cup, you have to be prepared to take the absolute maximum risk. However, last winter I felt that something had changed within me," said Puchner. She added: "The necessary ultimate commitment and unconditional willingness to take risks were no longer as pronounced as in previous years."
