Satellite manufacturer OHB and defense group Rheinmetall have founded a joint venture to pursue the Bundeswehr's largest satellite communications contract, a project the companies say could be worth up to ten billion euros.

The new company, registered in Bremen as OHB Rheinmetall Space Networks GmbH, was announced by both groups in a joint statement. According to the companies, the venture assumes overall responsibility for the Bundeswehr satellite project, covering development and integration, delivery, and long-term operation, including IT security and a Cyber Operation Center.

Scope of the planned system

Ziel der "OHB Rheinmetall Space Networks GmbH" sei es, der Bundeswehr eine leistungsfähige, geschützte und dauerhaft verfügbare Kommunikationsarchitektur zu liefern, teilten beide Konzerne mit. The system is designed to network soldiers, vehicles, platforms, and drones, securely transmitting voice, data, and real-time information across all command levels.
