Rheinmetall invests in Kassel Airport: Hessen sees site as military hub

The state of Hessen is participating through funding instruments and site security measures, according to its own account.

Kassel-Calden Airport was originally conceived as a civilian regional airport but had suffered significantly in recent years from declining passenger numbers. The military use is intended to stabilize the site economically. Rheinmetall also sees Calden as a hub for the transport of defense goods within Germany and to alliance partners.

Site advantages and economic prospects

From the state government's perspective, the connection to the motorway and rail network is a decisive site advantage. Hessen has significantly expanded its role in the security and defense industry in recent years, the State Chancellery said. The airport is therefore to serve more strongly as a logistics hub for the Bundeswehr and NATO partners.

Rheinmetall declined to comment on details of the investment plans upon request. Industry circles assume that the funds will flow, among other things, into the expansion of cargo infrastructure and new hangar capacity. The company had previously announced that it would significantly expand its production and logistics capacity in Germany.

There are cautiously positive reactions to the plans from the northern Hessen region. The municipality of Calden and the Kassel district see opportunities for additional jobs and added value in the expansion. At the same time, questions are being raised regarding noise abatement, land consumption, and civilian participation by local residents.

Critics from local politics argue that a stronger military use of the airport is difficult to reconcile with the existing noise protection requirements. They demand binding assurances that civilian flight operations will not be further restricted. Environmental associations are also raising concerns about additional land sealing.

The state government made clear that the expansion would proceed without encroachment on existing nature conservation areas. At the same time, it wants to intensify dialogue with the municipalities. The next planning steps are to be presented in the coming months, the State Chancellery said.

It remains unclear to what extent the Bundeswehr and NATO partners will use the site in the future. According to the state, talks on this are underway with the Ministry of Defence. The timing of the investment steps has also not yet been definitively determined.

Outlook on further planning

In the spring of 2026, the Hessian state government had already presented a "Security and Defense Action Plan" that provides for the strengthening of domestic defense industry sites. The "Defence Hub Nordhessen" is considered one of the flagship projects of this plan and, according to the state government's wishes, is to have a signaling effect beyond Hessen.

Industry veterans also see the project as a trend reversal: regional airports suffering from declines in civilian passenger numbers are being repositioned as logistics and military sites in several federal states. According to observers, Hessen is taking on a pioneering role in this regard.
