In May 2026, according to the Federal Motor Vehicle Office (KBA), one in four newly registered passenger cars in Germany was purely electrically powered, while gasoline cars continued to lose market share.
The Federal Motor Vehicle Office registered 59,969 battery-electric passenger cars in May, representing a share of 25.0 percent of all 239,448 new registrations. Compared to the same month last year, this means an increase of 39.3 percent. However, compared to the previous month, April 2026, e-car registrations decreased by around seven percent. From January to May 2026, new registrations of purely electric vehicles totaled 283,949 vehicles, according to KBA data.
