OpenAI will make its most powerful AI model to date, GPT-5.6 Sol, as well as the more affordable variants Terra and Luna, publicly available on Thursday, the company announced late Tuesday (local time) on the online service X.

The release of GPT-5.6 comes after weeks of delays during which the US government raised security concerns about potential misuse of the powerful technology. Following additional tests and discussions between OpenAI and government officials, the Trump administration approved the broad release, according to circles familiar with the matter.

As the post on X indicates, the GPT-5.6 series includes three models: Sol as OpenAI's new flagship, the mid-range model Terra for daily use, and Luna, a fast and cost-effective variant. In an initial preview at the end of June, OpenAI promoted improved agentic capabilities in the areas of programming, biology, and cybersecurity.
