Schönefeld, 12 June 2026

A new facility for accelerated asylum procedures at the EU external border has been opened at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER) in Schönefeld on Friday, comprising 40 places under the name "External Border Facility of the State of Brandenburg."

The new point of contact is part of the European Asylum and Migration Pact, which the European Union has reformed in recent years. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, this represents "the next important step at European level." With the start of the Pact, difficult asylum cases are to be examined directly at the external border in the future, in order to prevent certain asylum seekers with a potential danger and from the outset no prospect of being allowed to remain from even entering Germany in the first place. The BER airport is expressly counted by the ministry among the external border locations.
