ORF Editorial Board Warns of "Loss of Trust" Over Questionable Documentaries

In a statement released today, the board warned against any perception that ORF’s reporting could be influenced by external interests. "Es darf nicht einmal der Eindruck entstehen, dass Berichterstattung im ORF käuflich sei" (There must not even be the impression that ORF’s reporting is for sale), the statement read. The board also expressed concern that individual actions could jeopardize the credibility of the entire organization.

Fallout from the Schöber Case

The controversy comes amid lingering scrutiny over ORF-III Program Director Peter Schöber, who faced allegations of misconduct and editorial interference over a year ago. Approximately 60 employees testified in an investigation into Schöber’s leadership, including claims of bullying and undue influence on editorial decisions.

Following the investigation, ORF acknowledged "teilweise problematisches" (partly problematic) leadership behavior and restructured its operations to prevent Schöber from making personnel decisions unilaterally. The broadcaster also took steps to block "direkte Durchgriffe" (direct interventions) in programming matters. However, the Editorial Board has deemed these measures "unzureichend" (insufficient), calling for stronger accountability.

Calls for Greater Accountability

The board reiterated that ORF’s editorial teams, including those at ORFIII, must operate independently. "Die ORF-Redaktionen – selbstverständlich auch die von ORFIII – arbeiten unabhängig in ihrer journalistischen Berichterstattung" (ORF’s editorial teams—including those at ORFIII—work independently in their journalistic reporting), the board stated.

It further stressed that any form of external influence on editorial work is unacceptable. "Jede Form von Einflussnahme auf redaktionelle Arbeit ist unzulässig, Verstöße dagegen sind zu ahnden" (Any form of influence on editorial work is inadmissible, and violations must be punished), the board emphasized.

The ongoing debate highlights broader concerns about the integrity of public broadcasting in Austria, with critics warning that failure to address these issues could lead to a lasting loss of public confidence.
