Several members of the ORF Foundation Board have filed or announced a constitutional complaint at the Constitutional Court after announced funding cuts for the broadcaster, while allegations against individual board members regarding possible conflicts of interest are also being examined.
The debate over the future financing of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) has escalated. The background is a course of austerity that envisages significantly less funding for the broadcaster in the coming years. Foundation Board members see this as an interference in the independence of public-service broadcasting and have now initiated the route to the supreme court.
The Foundation Board is the supervisory body of the ORF and oversees, among other things, the management around Director General Ingrid Thurnher as well as Roland Weißmann. The board members represent different social groups, from social partners to governing parties. Their task is to ensure program quality and compliance with the public-service mandate.
