ORF Summer Talks 2026: Stribl announces focus on substance rather than election campaigning

Campaign-free period as an opportunity for substance

Stribl pointed to what she sees as a campaign-free phase in Austria. The next state elections are accordingly not expected until autumn 2027. The moderator sees this pause as an opportunity to emphasize policy issues more strongly and to talk less about possible coalitions or party-political maneuvers.

The summer talks are a long-standing ORF format in which the leaders of the parties represented in parliament provide information about their political plans in longer one-on-one interviews. The format is traditionally broadcast on „Zeit im Bild" (ZiB) and ORF 2 and is regarded as a barometer of mood ahead of the political autumn season.

Interlocutors and framework

According to ORF programming, the guests for this year's edition include the Vice-President and ÖVP chair as well as the SPÖ chair, further the FPÖ leader and Neos chairwoman Beate Meinl-Reisinger. Leonore Gewessler, regarded as a prominent voice of the Greens, is also expected to take part in the talks. The exact order and broadcast dates will be announced by ORF in its summer schedule.

Stribl emphasized that she wanted not only to give the politicians the opportunity to set out their positions, but also to demand concrete proposals for solutions. This was particularly important, she said, in a phase in which many people are still feeling the consequences of recent crises in their everyday lives – from inflation to energy policy. ORF had stressed repeatedly in recent years that the format is deliberately also meant to serve substantive depth.

By deliberately refraining from an overly strong election-campaign slant, Stribl is responding to criticism from previous years, in which observers had accused the format of being overly staged tactical games. She said she wanted the summer talks to be understood once again more strongly as a forum for substantive debate.

Issues in the shadow of multiple crises

ORF also said that this year's talks would take place under the impression of several international crises and a strained economic situation. Issues such as competitiveness, migration and internal security are likely to play a role, as are climate policy and social justice – depending on each party's focus.

Viewers can expect, according to ORF, several evening editions in the height of summer. Accompanying online formats will be offered in which editors provide background and contextualize statements. Stribl sees this as a complement to the classic television interview.

With a view to autumn 2027, when the next state elections are due, this year's summer talk series is also seen as a mood test for the parties. Party-political observers traditionally read the interviews as an indicator of the issues and personnel with which the parties intend to launch the next election cycle.

Looking ahead to autumn 2027

Stribl herself sees the summer talks less as the kickoff of an election campaign than as a space for discussion: „Es soll darum gehen, wie der Aufschwung trotz der Krisen gelingen kann", she reiterated. In doing so, she is setting the direction for this year's edition of the format, which has been a fixture of ORF's summer agenda for decades.
