People in need of care in Germany must pay an average of 3,364 euros per month out of their own pocket for a place in a nursing home in the first year – more than ever before.
According to calculations by the Association of Substitute Health Funds (vdek), which are available to the dpa news agency, the out-of-pocket share at the beginning of July 2026 was 3,364 euros per month nationwide on average. This means the burden has risen by nearly 120 euros since the beginning of the year and is even 256 euros higher compared to July of the previous year. "Nursing home places are becoming more and more expensive," according to the substitute health fund association's analysis.
The largest cost increases were recorded, according to the association, particularly in "care-related expenses" – due in part to higher personnel costs. "had to pay more than 3,360 euros out of their own pocket on average nationwide in July in their first year in a nursing home," the vdek explained. vdek CEO Ulrike Elsner attributed the increase to high personnel expenses: "There was a backlog and it is right that care workers are paid well."
Causes: Personnel costs drive the increase
However, this development must not lead to ever higher burdens on those in need of care. "There needs to be a cap on cost increases, and the planned care reform must achieve a fair distribution of burdens and balanced out-of-pocket shares," Elsner continued. "But it cannot be the case that this leads to ever greater burdens on those in need of care."
