VIENNA, April 30, 2026 Overcrowded ÖBB Railjet evacuated by Vienna police Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) halted and evacuated a packed Railjet train at Vienna's main station on Thursday afternoon after passengers refused to disembark despite safety concerns, delaying the Zurich-bound service by an hour.

Safety Concerns Halt Departure

The train, scheduled to depart Vienna Hauptbahnhof at 1:28 p.m., was stopped before leaving the station because "no secure travel could be guaranteed," an ÖBB spokesperson confirmed to the Austrian Press Agency (APA). According to the spokesperson, the Railjet was dangerously overcrowded: "With so many people on board, it could not have continued," she said.

Eyewitness accounts estimated between 30 and 40 passengers were involved in the incident, though ÖBB did not provide an official count. The railway offered affected travelers €25 vouchers for alternative connections, but many refused the compensation, leading to the standoff.
