Italian police have reported three Pakistani citizens who allegedly smeared paint on the Rialto Bridge in Venice on Friday and left a political statement.

Course of the Action

The action took place in the late morning, when numerous tourists were crossing the bridge. According to the City of Venice, the three men sprayed green and red paint onto the historic masonry of the Rialto Bridge. They then unfurled a banner with political slogans before they could be apprehended by passersby and police. The men were arrested on the spot.

The public prosecutor's office in Venice has opened an investigation. The accused are charged with, among other things, property damage to a cultural monument of national significance. The 16th-century bridge is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage and is one of the most photographed structures in the lagoon city. An exact damage figure has not yet been determined according to the city administration; experts are currently examining how the paint can be removed from the sensitive stone.
