Access to the bridge remained restricted for several hours, further burdening the already heavy flow of visitors in the city. Investigations and Possible Backgrounds

The backgrounds of the action are still unclear. Investigators are examining possible links to extremist networks, according to Italian media reports. When raising the banner, the men are said to have shouted slogans alluding to a conflict in the Middle East. However, there was no concrete evidence of an organizational connection as of Friday evening. The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Rome was also contacted, according to the Foreign Ministry.

The incident comes amid growing concern about the state of Venice's cultural heritage. Just last year, a similar paint attack on St. Mark's Basilica caused international outrage. According to its own statements, the city plans to increasingly deploy cameras and patrols at particularly vulnerable monuments in the future. Environmental organizations also called for higher penalties for property damage to historic buildings.

The reported men are in police custody. A date for an initial judicial hearing has not yet been announced. Should the charge be confirmed, they face multi-year prison sentences as well as heavy fines under Italian law. The diplomatic consulates have been involved, as the accused are said by the authorities not to possess valid residence permits.
