Pallitsch falls short in 1,500-meter heat at European Athletics Championships

By being eliminated in the heats, Pallitsch missed not only the chance for a medal but also valuable international ranking points. The European Championship points are relevant for the upcoming World Championships and feed into the qualification standings.

Consequences for the rankings

The domestic athletics fan community had been hoping for an appearance in the semifinals. Austrian middle-distance runners rarely step into the international spotlight, which is why any European Championship final round would be a small sensation.

On the same competition day, the heptathlon is also taking place, in which Verena Mayr from Upper Austria is aiming for a medal. Mayr, 31 years old, completed the 100-meter hurdles on the first day in 14.27 seconds, finishing in 23rd place. In the high jump, she matched her personal season best with 1.71 meters.

"I had the final in my mind, now I'm taking the time to think about a few things," Mayr said after her first events, looking ahead to the remaining tasks. The Upper Austrian athlete is competing at these European Championships, in her own words, "for every point."

Mayr will tackle the remaining heptathlon events on Friday, including the shot put, 200 meters, long jump, javelin throw, and the concluding 800-meter run. Her intermediate result after the first day still leaves all possibilities open, even though she did not run in the top range in the hurdles.

The European Athletics Championships in Birmingham are one of the most important sporting events of the European summer and bring together the best athletes on the continent. For Austria, alongside Mayr, there is still another weekend with hopes for top placements ahead.
