Paris Kindergarten Scandal: 16 Arrested in Widespread Sexual Abuse Investigation

Paris's new socialist mayor, Emmanuel Grégoire, announced a 20-million-euro action plan to address the crisis. The plan includes measures for quick and transparent reporting of suspected cases, involving and supporting parents, and making structural improvements to prevent future abuses.

Citywide Investigations

Since the beginning of the year, 78 school caretakers have been suspended, 31 of them due to suspicion of sexual violence. In 2025, 30 caretakers were suspended, with 16 cases linked to sexual violence allegations.

One case involved a caretaker who was investigated in 2025 for sexual violence at a school in the 11th arrondissement. The same individual had been taken into police custody in 2024 for similar incidents at another nearby school.

Parents and politicians in Paris have expressed growing concern over reports of violence and abuse in the city's student daycare centers, which they say have not always been addressed consistently.

Political Response

Barka Zerouali, spokesperson for the #MeTooSchool collective, told AFP: 'Die Ermittlungen schreiten endlich voran, entsprechend der Schwere der gemeldeten Vorfälle' ('The investigations are finally progressing, according to the seriousness of the reported incidents.').

On Wednesday morning, the Paris prosecutor's office conducted a raid at the Saint-Dominique elementary school in the 7th arrondissement as part of the ongoing investigations.

Mayor Grégoire emphasized a zero-tolerance approach, stating, 'We must rethink everything from the ground up, with one goal in mind: zero tolerance.'

The case has drawn comparisons to previous high-profile abuse scandals in France, raising questions about systemic failures in child protection mechanisms.

Authorities have urged parents and staff to report any suspicious behavior as the investigations continue to unfold across the city.
