Amsterdam, May 6, 2026

A plane carrying at least one passenger from a cruise ship experiencing a Hantavirus outbreak has landed at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. The aircraft arrived at 7:47 p.m., as confirmed by multiple sources. The affected individuals are receiving medical treatment in the Netherlands.

Outbreak on Cruise Ship

On the ship, currently anchored off the coast of Cape Verde, three deaths linked to the Hantavirus have been confirmed so far. Among the victims are a Dutch couple and a German woman. Approximately 150 people remain on board, including passengers and crew members.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is working closely with the ship’s operators to monitor the health of those affected and facilitate evacuations if necessary. The confirmed pathogen is the Andes strain of the Hantavirus, which can be transmitted through close human contact.

Measures and International Responses

The Spanish government has decided to allow the ship to dock in the Canary Islands, despite opposition from the regional government. The vessel is set to arrive in Tenerife, where passengers and crew will be examined and treated under strict safety protocols before returning to their home countries.
