Danish rider Mads Pedersen won the stage of the Tour de France, which was dominated by a breakaway group, while Norwegian Torstein Træen took over the Yellow Jersey thanks to the time loss of the favorites group.
With temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees in southern France, the previous day's stage ended with a clear victory for Pedersen, who prevailed convincingly in the sprint of an early breakaway group. The 181.9 km between Carcassonne and Foix were considered ideal terrain for breakaways, as there were no significant climbs to overcome.
Heat battle in southern France
The top riders around Slovenian Tadej Pogačar and his Danish rival Jonas Vingegaard reached the finish with a gap of around 13 minutes. Since Pogačar had only taken over the Yellow Jersey the day before and there were no major climbs on the stage anyway, the defending champion from Team UAE made no serious efforts to catch the leading group.
Due to the large time gap of the favorites, Træen moved to the top of the general classification and takes the Yellow Jersey from Pogačar. The Norwegian had previously been in the breakaway group and benefited from the stage's configuration.
