Toronto, August 9, 2026

Third-seeded Jessica Pegula has been eliminated in the round of 16 of the WTA 1000 hard-court tournament in Toronto, falling 3-6, 3-6 to Russia's Diana Shnaider.

World number three Jessica Pegula suffered a surprisingly clear defeat on Saturday in Toronto. Against French Open semifinalist Diana Shnaider, the American found no answer throughout the entire match and absorbed a straight-sets loss. After just 76 minutes, Shnaider converted her first match point to advance to the quarterfinals.

The defeat weighs especially heavy on Pegula, as the Toronto tournament is considered one of the most important preparatory stops ahead of the upcoming US Open. The 31-year-old not only loses valuable match practice on hard courts, but also numerous points in the WTA rankings. Even before the tournament, Pegula had been dealing with a minor injury, which had already forced her to drop a set in the second round against a qualifier.
