The Stuttgart district court has issued a penalty order against Left Party Bundestag lawmaker Gökay Akbulut for attempted dangerous bodily harm and insult in connection with an incident on an Intercity train.

The decision affects the 43-year-old politician from Mannheim, who has represented the Left Party in the Bundestag since 2017. The penalty order amounts to 120 daily rates of €430 each, totaling €51,600. According to court spokesperson Matthias Buchen, the order is not yet final.

Background: Incident on the ICE from Heidelberg to Stuttgart

The proceedings stem from an incident on the evening of January 25, 2025, on a Deutsche Bahn Intercity traveling from Heidelberg to Stuttgart. At the time, Akbulut reported on her Instagram channel that she had been racially insulted and attacked on the train. She had therefore filed a criminal complaint, she told the "Welt." "Ich wurde bei der Zugfahrt angegriffen und verletzt, niemand bestreitet das. Deshalb habe ich auch Anzeige erstattet."
