Deputy US Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg has called on representatives of the defense industry to submit plans within a maximum of three weeks for faster deliveries or increased production of critical capabilities.

According to a document reviewed by CNN and the "Washington Post," the Pentagon has set a very tight deadline for the industry. Companies are to outline within three weeks how delivery times can be shortened and/or manufacturing capacities for certain weapons systems can be expanded.

The background is concern that current procurement processes can no longer keep pace with the speed at which the US needs ammunition and weapons. The letter explicitly states that multi-year development cycles in their previous form are no longer acceptable. This noticeably tightens the Department of Defense's tone toward the industry.
