At a private Halloween party in Potsdam, ten people were injured after pepper spray was used. Police confirmed the report that “ten people were injured.”
The editorial team has no further confirmed information on the exact sequence of events or the status of the investigation. How the pepper spray was used and what caused the injuries therefore remain unknown.
The West Police Directorate said on Sunday that, among a large number of private Halloween celebrations, there had been only “isolated” cases of “matters relevant to police action.” The number of other police-relevant incidents on Halloween night was therefore assessed as low.
The incident in Potsdam was thus not the only celebration mentioned by the authorities over the Halloween weekend. The specific occasions that led to the other police-relevant matters were not explained in further detail in the available information.
Pepper spray is a so-called irritant. It primarily irritates the eyes and respiratory tract and can cause pain, tearing, and temporary impairment of vision. However, the available information neither specifies the type of injuries nor their severity.
Police personnel recorded the incident on Halloween night. The officers or units present on site, and whether police protection or medical assistance was provided, cannot be determined from the confirmed facts.
According to the police report, a large number of private celebrations were monitored or attended to in response to party activity. The reference to only “isolated” cases of “matters relevant to police action” indicates that the police did not assume that the Halloween night was broadly problematic.
The outcome of the medical treatment for the ten injured people is not documented. There are also no reliable information on whether a police complaint was filed or whether the investigation is continuing.
The incident raises questions about safety at private parties and the use of pepper spray. The consequences for event planning, security concepts, or police equipment are not yet known.
Further information is likely to depend on the results of the police investigation. Until then, the incident remains limited to the confirmed number of ten people injured, the use of pepper spray at a Halloween party in Potsdam, and the statement by the West Police Directorate.
