Frankfurt am Main, June 25, 2026
The Franco-British international lawyer and writer Philippe Sands will receive the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 2026, as the Board of Trustees of the award announced on Thursday in Frankfurt am Main.
Reasoning of the Board of Trustees
As the descendant of Holocaust survivors, Sands demonstrates, drawing on his own family history, how international law came into being and what experiences lie behind the offenses of "genocide" and "crimes against humanity," the Board of Trustees explained its decision. Sands was born in London in 1960 and is, according to the Board of Trustees, one of the most important intellectual voices of our time.
As one of the most important intellectual voices of our time, Sands is committed to justice, peace, and the steadfast defense of international law, said Sebastian Guggolz, President of the Börsenverein and Chair of the Board of Trustees. Sands is far more than a chronicler of international law's injustices and crimes. He has produced a body of literary work that reveals both the suffering of the victims and the motives of the perpetrators.
