Pilsen Court Orders Extradition of Far-Right Extremist Marla Svenja Liebich to Germany

From Going into Hiding to Arrest at the Border

After her conviction, Liebich changed her legal gender from male to female and her first name from Sven to Marla Svenja. Critics viewed this as a provocation and spoke of an abuse of the self-determination law. Civil rights and trans organizations also expressed suspicion that it could be a far-right action against the new law.

Liebich was originally supposed to begin her prison sentence at the Chemnitz correctional facility but went into hiding. She ignored a summons to begin her sentence in the women's section there. From the end of August 2025, a nationwide, and later Europe-wide, manhunt was initiated for her.

In early April, Liebich was finally arrested by Czech authorities in Schönbach near Aš, not far from the German border. According to a report by "Mitteldeutsche Zeitung," she was wearing men's clothing and had a shaved head at the time of her arrest. She attempted to flee on an e-scooter but was apprehended.

Fear of Men's Prison – Court Disagrees

Since her arrest, Liebich has been held in Pilsen prison, also known as Bory. The facility houses over 1,200 inmates, including serious offenders, and is primarily a men's prison with a smaller women's section. Conditions there are considered harsh, and the overcrowding of Czech prisons is a known problem.

At the first hearing in Pilsen in mid-May, the court postponed the decision on extradition by two weeks. Liebich stated at the time that she did not want to be transferred to Germany because she feared being placed in a men's prison and dying in custody. She literally said: "she feared being brought to a men's prison in Germany and dying in custody."

The court in Pilsen did not share this concern. It determined that Liebich did not face negative consequences in Germany, particularly not due to her gender. Shortly before the verdict was announced on Monday, Liebich filed a motion to recuse the presiding judge, which the court rejected.

What Happens After Extradition

If the extradition order becomes legally binding, Liebich will be handed over to the German authorities and is expected to be taken to the Chemnitz correctional facility. The Saxon justice system – not the Halle public prosecutor's office – would then be responsible for her case there.

The final decision on whether Liebich will serve her sentence in a women's or men's section will be made by the prison administration in Chemnitz. This will involve assessing whether she poses a danger to others or is herself at risk. Her outward appearance and demeanor may play a role in this classification.

In her last appearance before a German court, Liebich had appeared in women's clothing, with makeup and painted fingernails. At the hearing in Pilsen, however, she wore a beard, glasses, makeup, and a leopard-print top.

Legal Proceedings Against the Change of Legal Status

The Halle public prosecutor's office had requested Liebich's transfer to Germany after she initially resisted extradition. It is considered likely that only a few days will pass between the legal bindingness of the order and the actual handover.

Parallel to the extradition proceedings, efforts are underway in Germany to reverse Liebich's change of legal status. The Saalekreis district had already initiated legal proceedings in December to correct the entry in the civil status register. In March, the Halle District Court announced it would examine a possible revocation of the name and gender change.

According to the Halle public prosecutor's office, a further change of name and gender would initially have no impact on the ongoing proceedings. The conviction from 2023 remains valid regardless.
