Player revolt against Bielsa ahead of Uruguay's match against Spain

Conflict between stars and coach

The conflict is not new. As early as 2024, after Uruguay's semifinal exit from the Copa América, there had been the first major rupture with the 70-year-old. At the time, striker star Luis Suárez retired from the national team and accused Bielsa of having created a "toxic atmosphere" within the team and the coaching staff. The dispute had continued to simmer since then and now appears to be coming to a head ahead of the most important group match.

Strained mood after draws

The sporting omens are also tense. The 1930 and 1950 world champion did not get beyond a 1:1 against Saudi Arabia in its opener and had to settle for a 2:2 against Cape Verde as well. In light of these results, the leading players evidently fear that Bielsa's method is pushing the team and squad to the limit of their capacity without delivering the desired sporting return.

Bielsa enjoys an ambivalent reputation in the business. He is sometimes worshipped with hymnal praise by colleagues and fans of his former clubs – not least because of his clear footballing signature. The president of his former club Olympique Marseille, however, once described Bielsa's style of play as "collective suicide." This spectrum between veneration and criticism is now also reflected in the national team.

High stakes for both sides

Uruguay needs a win against the already well-placed Spaniards on Saturday to advance safely to the Round of 16. The Spaniards lead Group H after a 4:0 against Saudi Arabia and a 0:0 against Cape Verde; Uruguay, after the two draws, is already under pressure. The outcome of the match could also decide Bielsa's future – especially since, according to media reports, the players' criticism relates not only to training but also to his communication.

The leading players are also said to have accused the coach of wanting to bring him down for the second time in his tenure, which began in 2023. This means more than just a single match is at stake for Bielsa. The clubs of the critics – Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester United – likewise have an interest in ensuring that their key players come through the World Cup without injury.

The Spanish team is only tangentially affected by all this. Coach Luis de la Fuente emphasized ahead of the duel that the density of performance at this World Cup was enormous and that the footballing differences at the national level had become noticeably smaller. "Das ist mir besonders aufgefallen: Diese enorme Ausgeglichenheit, die man derzeit sieht", said the 1990 world champion. Spain can remain group winner with a draw; Uruguay, by contrast, needs a win.

Possible consequences in the event of a rupture

Should an early rupture actually occur, Uruguay's federation would be faced with the difficult question of who could take over the team in the middle of an ongoing World Cup tournament. Bielsa had taken the post in 2023 and was considered the preferred candidate. His current assistant coach would be the obvious transitional solution, but the short preparation time and the already strained squad make any change risky.

The players themselves have not publicly commented so far. The reports speak exclusively of an internal meeting in which the criticism was directed at Bielsa personally. Whether there has already been a response or an acknowledgment from the coach is unclear. Bielsa himself has also not commented on the allegations.

Open questions ahead of kickoff

What is clear is that the sporting stage is further intensifying the conflict. Uruguay started the tournament as a co-favorite to win the group, but is now falling short of its own expectations. A defeat against Spain would mean elimination at the group stage – and at the same time retrospectively confirm the players' criticism. A win, on the other hand, could take the pressure off and at least temporarily stabilize Bielsa.

For the public, for now, only the discrepancy between two readings remains: on the one hand, the visionary coach who has shaped South American football; on the other hand, a coach who, according to his most important players, is pushing the team to the limit of its capacity and beyond.

The World Cup group match between Uruguay and Spain will kick off in the night to Saturday at 2:00 a.m. Should the team carry the criticism into the match, it would be a first at this tournament – an open player revolt immediately before a knockout-relevant match.
