Ho Chi Minh City, 16 June 2026

Police in Ho Chi Minh City have dismantled an illegal cat meat network, rescued more than 400 stolen cats and arrested nine suspects.

Scale of the operation

During an inspection, investigators found around 400 live cats in 45 metal cages. They also discovered four styrofoam boxes containing approximately 80 deep-frozen animals, as the animal welfare organization Humane World for Animals reported on Tuesday. In additional operations, more than 100 additional domestic cats were seized.

The authorities assume that the animals were stolen and intended for the illegal meat trade. Cat meat is consumed in parts of Vietnam; the trade has repeatedly been the subject of investigations and animal welfare debates. Police did not initially comment publicly on specific trade routes or buyers.
