By applying a so-called tourniquet, the officers were able to stop the severe bleeding in the woman’s arm and thus likely saved her life, the officers reported.

What the officers did

A tourniquet is a bandage or device placed on an extremity to stop severe bleeding. It is designed to prevent further blood loss. After the bite attack, the officers specifically applied this device to the injured woman’s arm.

According to police, the person who attacked was the woman’s son. University Hospital personnel also responded and apparently provided medical care to the injured woman.
