Pope Leo XIV arrived in France on 25 September 2026 for a multi-day visit and began talks in the capital with President Emmanuel Macron.
Pope Leo XIV arrived in France on Friday. Upon his arrival, he was welcomed at the airport by representatives of the French government and the Catholic Church. This is the first state visit by the head of the Church to France since his election. He is accompanied by a Vatican delegation.
Meeting with Macron at the Élysée Palace
The centrepiece of the first day was a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. At the subsequent press encounter in the courtyard of the palace, Macron stated that France is a secular state but acknowledges its Christian history and sees major shared tasks with the Church in peace, human dignity, social responsibility, environmental protection, and the ethical shaping of AI and technological progress, according to the president, who also picked up on Pope Leo's formula of a "disarmed and disarming" peace. The president's office described the meeting as a sign of deepened cooperation between the Republic and the Holy See.
