Assisi, 6 August 2026

Pope Leo XIV celebrated a Mass on Wednesday at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi, Italy, where he met numerous young people from the Franciscan Order and the Umbria region.

The celebration in the Umbrian city is considered an extraordinary event, according to the organizers. There are no known records from previous centuries indicating that a pope had celebrated Mass directly in front of the Porziuncola Chapel, the organizers explained. The visit thus joins a series of historically significant papal visits to this central place for the Franciscan Order.

The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli encloses the small Porziuncola Chapel, considered the cradle of the Franciscan Order. According to tradition, it is at this site that Francis of Assisi anchored the beginnings of his community and wrote essential parts of his rule. To this day, the chapel remains the spiritual center of the Order.
