Rome, 29 June 2026

Pope Leo XIV solemnly bestowed the Pallium on Vienna's Archbishop Josef Grünwidl in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome on Tuesday, a roughly five-centimetre-wide band made of white lamb's wool that new metropolitans traditionally receive on 29 June.

The ceremony took place as part of the festive mass for the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, which began at 9:30 a.m. in St. Peter's Basilica. Grünwidl, who heads the Archdiocese of Vienna, had travelled to Rome specifically for this act. His predecessor, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, also celebrated the mass in St. Peter's Basilica, as reported by the Catholic news agency Kathpress.
