Nearly five years after the end of her term as Federal Chancellor, the official portrait of Angela Merkel was unveiled on Tuesday at the Bode Museum in Berlin, painted by the 28-year-old Franco-German artist Jérémie Queyras.

The painting was initially concealed behind a cloth and was presented to the public in the presence of the 71-year-old, her husband Joachim Sauer, and numerous guests to great applause. Merkel and Queyras unveiled the painting together, as Die Zeit reported. The former chancellor appeared moved at the unveiling and, according to reports, spoke of an „unvergessliches Erlebnis".

The portrait differs from the paintings of her predecessors on one essential point: unlike previous federal chancellors, Merkel had herself portrayed standing. She wears a blue blazer jacket, the color tone of which, according to the artist, is meant to express strength and authority. Her gaze is described as both determined and contemplative.
