At the celebratory event for the 40th anniversary of the Federal Ministry for the Environment in Berlin, former Chancellor Angela Merkel described climate protection as a matter of survival for humanity, while also practicing self-criticism.

Celebration at Café Moskau

The CDU politician spoke on Tuesday evening at Café Moskau on Karl-Marx-Allee to around 250 guests from politics, administration, and environmental associations. Merkel, who headed the ministry from 1994 to 1998 under Chancellor Helmut Kohl, said according to her speech manuscript: "Despite all other political challenges, climate change remains a matter of survival for humanity." At the same time, she admitted that climate goals are under pressure today and "sometimes it seems to me that these days it's fading into the background a bit."
